Antique J. Hoare ABP Cut Crystal Ovoid Whiskey Jug Decanter | American Brilliant Cut Glass

A striking antique American Brilliant Period cut crystal whiskey jug/decanter by J. Hoare & Co. of Corning, New York.

This is a piece I find especially impressive because there is so much to appreciate the longer you look at it. The ovoid body is covered with elaborate hand cutting—large hobstars, deeply cut geometric miters, fine crosshatched panels, dramatic radiating fans, and intricate prism cutting around the lower portion. Every turn of the jug seems to reveal another detail, and the deep cutting gives it wonderful brilliance and sparkle in the light.

I particularly love the substantial notched crystal handle and graceful pouring lip. Together with the large faceted crystal stopper, they give this jug a wonderful sense of weight, quality, and presence that is difficult to capture completely in photographs.

J. Hoare & Co. was one of the important American cutting houses associated with the Brilliant Period, and this jug is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship and elaborate cutting that make glass from this era so collectible.

Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or fleabites observed. Any minor surface wear is consistent with age and careful use. The decanter is fitted with a well-matched replacement stopper; the stopper is not original to the piece.
